The group was initially named the Central Ohio Commodore Users Group but was eventually renamed the Central Ohio Computer Users Group. The name change came after May 6, 1994, when Commodore International announced voluntary bankruptcy and liquidation. 

COCUG meetings serve as a social gathering. Attendees discuss computer issues and a variety of other topics, restaurant visits, travel, museums, digital photography, and other eclectic topics. There is no standard agenda or planned presentations. COCUG serves as a general discussion group.

Social Gathering

Several members meet at 9:00 a.m. for breakfast at Bob Evans before the group meeting. COCUG will move from the Bethel Road location to the Huber Village Boulevard location beginning in April 2024.

History

In the 1980s, COCUG met on Tuesday or Thursday in the basement of a bank in Gahanna, Ohio. The group eventually moved to Columbus State Community College. Due to the availability of the meeting room, the meeting date moved to the third Saturday.

Phil Lynch was a founding member of COCUG and its President. He eventually became ill and decided to retire and spend his time traveling as much as possible. The membership took over coordinating presentations and demonstrations.

Greg was involved with CCS when they moved from their West Broad Street location to 5880 North Meadows Blvd in Columbus, near 161 and Busch Blvd. Before Phil Lynch’s passing, Greg received his endorsement to merge COCUG with CCS as a Special Interest Group (SIG). This merger provided COCUG meetings with Internet access and a projector, which was unavailable at the Columbus State Community College.
